Jill Scott's mother Joyce Scott gave birth to Jill on April 4, 1972 located in Philadelphia Pennsylvania. Her mother was her grandmother. She grew up as an only child. Scott completed her studies at The Philadelphia High School for Girls. Then she enrolled in Temple University. Along with two jobs part-time, she took classes in secondary teaching at Temple University. Her goal was to be the high school's English teacher. However, she was not able to achieve this dream when, after studying for three years and becoming a teaching assistant, she left college. She began her career as a spoken-word artist, performing her pieces in live poetry readings. Then she teamed up with Amir Quest Love Thompson from The Roots. They ended up collaborating as well as co-writing You Got Me. She was first outed as a performer at the Roots Show. After that, she secured collaborations with stars such as Eric Benet Will Smith and Common. In addition, she had the opportunity to experience the arts of performing during the Broadway tour across Canada's musical Rent. She was also the first signee to Hidden Beach Recordings.
